  • Who We Need

    There is a role for everyone in Global Swadeshi. Those who have innovations, work on proving and documenting. Those who need help, go through our libraries, find out what works for your situations, locate a mentor and start building. Those who are fine - having what they need, and not being in danger - fund further research and teaching from your fortunate position!

    Initially Global Swadeshi was a rural movement focussed on farming, but the current crisis has convinced the network to move on urban issues also, and to expand cooperation to non-Gandhian groups.

    What is Swadeshi?

    Swadeshi means "own land." Gandhi used the term narrowly during the Indian independence movement to refer to economic self-sufficiency, particuarly in the matter of cloth. Each person was supposed to spin the yarn required to make their clothes and other fabric items using a manual spinning wheel, called a chakra. Self-sufficiency in clothing, through using local materials, local skills, and local labor was symbolic of a larger, collective struggle for freedom from British oppression.

    Economic and political independence are inherently interlinked. Swadeshi was Gandhi's word for the practice of a way of life which created economic independence, and the pressure towards political independence which this practice created.

    What is Global Swadeshi?

    Global swadeshi is the hope that one day everybody on the planet can enjoy swadeshi, in the sense of owning the things they need to be fully alive and economically self-supporting at this level. Tools and technologies, like the modern equivalents of Gandhi's chakra are one part of this process. The other part of this process is the collective struggle for freedom from oppression and freedom from want. Global swadeshi is a goal state: voluntary cooperation to create the conditions of life on the planet which will result in there being enough for everybody.

    While so many are poor, we cannot say that we are a rich world. Rather, we are a world which has the capacity first to support everyone, and secondly to manifest the latent abundance of the world in ways which this generation cannot even dream of.

    The global swadeshi movement exists in the hearts, hands and minds of every person who wants to help themselves and their neighbors become free.

     Superthreat Response

    The Global Swadeshi Network has been pushing a four step process to mainstream successful technologies and social practices. As the Superthreat model begins to achieve more currency, more and more of the work of the Network has become oriented towards reducing the damaging personal impact of each Superthreat by minimizing risk exposure for individuals, as a pathway towards stabilizing society as a whole. A world in which nobody dies of violence is a safe world. A world in which nobody is affected by ReDS is a healthy world. By preventing individual crisis, we prevent global crisis.

    The Global Swadeshi Network four path process is as follows:

    1> ALLY: nearly every problem has a dedicated team working on it, as you can see scanning through the Superstructs.

    2> PROVE AND DOCUMENT: find what works at a technical and social level. Make sure that the proof that the proposal works is well documented, and that the technique or system is documented well enough that people can download the materials online and replicate it for themselves.

    3> MATCH EXPERTS AND STUDENTS: even with documentation, people need a source of technical support and expertise to provide context and handle previously unseen situations using their years of experience and practice. Implementation teams - those trying a new farming approach, or drilling their own wells, or filtering the air for their building to protect against ReDS - often need to know there is expert guidance available to get started. Although in practice most teams never need the backup - they can cope from their own resources - the presence of the mentors massively increases ACTION!

    4> FUND INNOVATION: Teams that are more than financially self-sufficient can donate resources to teams that need help to complete critical research, or prove-and-document ongoing progress, or support mentors to help other teams spread their knowledge more widely.

    Together, all of us know the answer. Individually we often struggle.

    Global Swadeshi is about giving each one of us access to the expertise and the knowledge we need to survive together, by sharing what we know.
